With over a decade of experience in the finance industry, Steiger has held roles at renowned institutions such as Goldman Sachs and UBS. She currently serves as executive director within Global Investment Research at Goldman Sachs, focusing on the U.S. Internet sector, including companies such as Alphabet, Meta and Amazon.

“I am very happy Alexandra is joining SAP,鈥 said Asam. 鈥淲e will benefit from her leadership and the wealth of expertise she brings from her previous responsibilities. In her new role, she can build on the strong foundation laid by Anthony Coletta and the entire Investor Relations team.鈥

Prior to her assignment at Goldman Sachs, Steiger was an executive director within UBS Equity Research, covering select U.S. Internet and Interactive Entertainment companies. Ala-Pietil盲鈥檚 election was supported by 95.50% of shareholders. Subsequently, Ala-Pietil盲 was also elected the new Chairman of the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board, completing the handover from former Chairman of the Board, Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Hasso Plattner.

As announced in 2023, 优蜜传媒Co-Founder and former Chairman of the Board Hasso Plattner left the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board after the 2024 AGM.

During Plattner鈥檚 tenure as Chairman of the Supervisory Board (May 2003 to May 2024), SAP鈥檚 market capitalization increased from c. 鈧30 billion to c. 鈧200 billion, making 优蜜传媒Germany鈥檚 most valuable listed company. Plattner鈥檚 innovative and competitive spirit has been a foundation of SAP鈥檚 success for more than 50 years, from the company鈥檚 first pioneering innovations in ERP to its strategic shift as an enterprise cloud and business AI leader. He will continue to serve as an advisor to SAP, ensuring his knowledge and experience remain available to the company.

Aicha Evans (55), Gerhard Oswald (70) and Dr. Friederik Rotsch (51) were re-elected as members of the Supervisory Board with 93.39%, 89.82% and 92.45% of the vote respectively. Prof. Dr. Ralf Herbrich (50) was elected with 99.29% of the vote as successor to Punit Renjen, who left the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board at the end of the 2024 AGM.

The AGM also supported all other proposals of the Executive Board and Supervisory Board. That included approving the actions of the Executive Board and Supervisory Board for fiscal 2023, 99.51% and 99.44% support respectively, and approving the adaptation of the compensation of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board. An overview of the resolutions of the Annual General Meetings 2024 and of previous years can be found .

For 2023, 优蜜传媒shareholders will receive a dividend of 鈧2.20 per share. This is an increase of 鈧0.15, or seven percent compared to the dividend paid for 2022. The total payout to shareholders will thus amount to around 鈧2.6 billion. The dividend is expected to be paid out from May 21, 2024.

The End of an Era: Hasso Plattner Steps Down /2024/05/the-end-of-an-era-hasso-plattner-steps-down/ Mon, 13 May 2024 11:15:00 +0000 /?p=224973 优蜜传媒co-founder Dietmar Hopp once said about co-founder Hasso Plattner: 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to quantify his legacy. All I can say is that without him, 优蜜传媒would never have been so successful.鈥 At the 2024 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on May 15, Plattner will step down from the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board after 21 years as its chairman.

One need only look at the key milestones in Plattner鈥檚 52-year career at 优蜜传媒to gain a vivid picture of his legacy. Together with Dietmar Hopp and his fellow co-founders, Plattner created the market for real-time business software, helped steer 优蜜传媒through more than five decades of fast-moving IT history, and drove SAP鈥檚 global expansion 鈥 transforming it from a single-product company to the world鈥檚 No. 1 provider of enterprise applications.

Over the years, he worked tirelessly to open new horizons for the company and its employees, identifying technological trends and channeling his pioneering spirit into revolutionizing far more than just data management.

1972-1973: The Early Days

Having created Germany鈥檚 first real-time software application with a user interface, Hasso Plattner and Dietmar Hopp founded a company they named Systemanalyse Programmentwicklung (鈥淪ystem Analysis Program Development鈥) on April 1, 1972, together with their IBM colleagues Claus Wellenreuther, Klaus Tschira, and Hans-Werner Hector.

In 1973, the entrepreneurs launched RF, their first financial accounting system. The 鈥淩鈥 in the name stood for 鈥渞eal time.鈥 Developed under Plattner鈥檚 leadership, RF laid the foundation for a series of software modules in a system that would later be known as 优蜜传媒R/1.

鈥淏efore I worked on RF,鈥 Plattner once said, 鈥淚 knew nothing about financial accounting; afterwards, I could hold seminars about it for CFOs. And not because I鈥檇 read stacks of books or was very smart, but because I鈥檇 learned from customers how to build this kind of system. I worked side by side with our customers at their offices every day.鈥

1976: The Formative Years

Systemanalyse Programmentwicklung was renamed 鈥淪AP.鈥 Each of the founders and their employees 鈥 numbering about 30 at this point 鈥 was a developer, salesperson, and consultant all rolled into one.

Hasso Plattner and Dietmar Hopp were constantly competing to be the best at programming and selling their products. Plattner recalls that it made him really mad once when Hopp sold more than he did. Wherever their tasks and skills converged, they would engage in a private, 鈥渢ake-no-prisoners鈥 contest to outdo each other.

Nevertheless, both men also knew how to harness their ambition and fondness for friendly competition to the benefit of their fledgling business.

1988: Conversion and IPO

优蜜传媒GmbH was converted to a stock corporation, 优蜜传媒AG, and in October 1988 it listed on the stock exchanges in Frankfurt and Stuttgart, providing the company with the funding it needed to expand into even more markets.

The initial public stock offering (IPO) was the beginning of a steep stock rise

1991: 优蜜传媒R/3

优蜜传媒R/3 made the company a global player. Plattner in 1991 at a Hewlett Packard (HP) event.

At SAP鈥檚 25th anniversary celebrations in 1997, Plattner recounted an incident in late January 1991, which he described as 鈥減robably the most dramatic situation鈥 in the company鈥檚 history: 鈥淎 year before the final delivery date for R/3, we realized during testing that its performance on our mainframe was completely unsatisfactory and that the test conditions were unacceptable. Six weeks before we had planned to present R/3 at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover, we had all but given up on the project.

We called an emergency meeting at which everyone remained standing, such was the urgency of the matter at hand. We decided to halt work on the mainframe systems and, in a last-ditch attempt, to switch to the new, more powerful Unix workstations, which we鈥檇 previously only used in development.

The presentation of R/3 on Unix was a huge hit. A year and a half later, we began shipping our new client-server software to customers. That was the start of R/3, a business application for network-based computers.鈥

1992: Heading Stateside

In the early 1990s, when everyone else鈥檚 attention was focused on getting 优蜜传媒R/3 to market quickly, sales of 优蜜传媒R/2 in Germany were a cause of concern for Dietmar Hopp. As Plattner recalls: 鈥淒ietmar and I were standing in his office, and he said to me, 鈥業t鈥檚 not looking good. The only option I can see is for you to pack the system up and take it to America.鈥欌 They agreed to continue promoting the 优蜜传媒R/2 mainframe software in Germany while going all-in on 优蜜传媒R/3 in the U.S.

At the Sapphire customer conference held in Orlando in September 1992, Plattner announced that 优蜜传媒would deliver the 优蜜传媒R/3 system within six weeks to anyone who ordered it there and then. By October, computer manufacturer Convex had signed a contract for the new product, giving 优蜜传媒its first 优蜜传媒R/3 customer in the United States. And when, not long after that, oil giant Chevron 鈥 one of the country鈥檚 largest companies 鈥 also opted for R/3, SAP鈥檚 new software, originally built with the midmarket in mind, was well on track to becoming a global success story.

1993: A Very Special Partnership

优蜜传媒entered into an alliance with the world鈥檚 largest software company: Microsoft. Bill Gates, who had flown into Munich to sign the contract in person, told the audience at the press conference announcing the partnership: 鈥淲e are delighted that SAP, one of the leading providers of standard software, supports Microsoft鈥檚 client-server operating system. We believe that many businesses will see this move by 优蜜传媒as a compelling reason to opt for Windows NT.鈥

And when, in 2010, Plattner received the Transatlantic Partnership Award, Gates had this to say about his friend and colleague: 鈥淚鈥檝e known Hasso for more than three decades. His knowledge, energy, and vision never cease to impress me.鈥

1997: 优蜜传媒Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

Plattner was appointed co-CEO, alongside Dietmar Hopp. In his speech at SAP鈥檚 25th anniversary celebrations, he spoke about what had helped the company prosper: 鈥淧roduct focus is one pillar of SAP鈥檚 success. When a product sells well, the employees share in that sense of achievement. That feeling is just as important to them as the pay they take home each month. Our employees identify with the product 鈥 that鈥檚 why they have always gone the extra mile. No matter how different our views at times were, we always managed to regroup and we never lost sight of the product. For the past 25 years, the founders and employees of 优蜜传媒remained true to the original product vision and never veered off course.鈥

1998: 优蜜传媒Conquers New York

On August 3, 1998, the company debuted on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the world鈥檚 largest exchange. CEO Hasso Plattner described SAP鈥檚 Wall Street listing as 鈥渁 strategic necessity and logical milestone in the history of SAP.鈥

That same year, Plattner founded the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) for Software System Engineering in Potsdam, near Berlin. 鈥淭he institute here in Potsdam is my contribution to training internationally competitive junior managers who help shape and advance the digital world,鈥 he said.

Dietmar Hopp and Klaus Tschira transitioned from the Executive Board to the Supervisory Board, and Plattner became co-CEO alongside Henning Kagermann.

1999: The mySAP.com Revolution

In May, Plattner announced the mySAP.com strategy, which set the company and its product portfolio on an entirely new path. Using the latest Web technology, mySAP.com connected e-commerce solutions with the company鈥檚 existing ERP applications.

To be successful in the increasingly important Internet business, Plattner relied on the mySAP.com strategy

According to Plattner, success on the Internet was key to the company鈥檚 survival. At the Sapphire conference in Philadelphia in September 1999, a live demo of mySAP.com — with a prelude by Plattner playing Queen鈥檚 鈥淚 Want to Break Free鈥 live on electric guitar — was enough to convince customers to adopt SAP鈥檚 Web strategy.

And, true to form, Plattner was already thinking about where the technology would go next, predicting that e-commerce and the hosting of applications on 优蜜传媒servers would be 鈥渢he future of software sales.鈥

2003: From Executive Board to Supervisory Board

Plattner stepped down from the Executive Board and was elected chairman of the Supervisory Board.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in May, he said: 鈥淭his rising star of the 90s is now playing in the same league as IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle.鈥

Though no longer its CEO, Plattner continued to channel his passion and his eye for technological trends into driving 优蜜传媒forward, but now in his new role as chief software advisor on the Supervisory Board. That same year, he helped found the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (鈥渄.school鈥) at Stanford University, providing funds to support its work on design thinking, a new approach to finding creative solutions to complex problems.

2006: The In-Memory Database

It was in 2006 that Plattner and students at HPI began work on a revolutionary technology. The result was 优蜜传媒HANA (High-Performance ANalytic Appliance), an entirely new, column-oriented, in-memory database management system.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not so easy for a big company to break out and do something radically different,鈥 said Plattner. 鈥淭he university context gives you the freedom to do it.鈥

Plattner loves to pass on his knowledge to young people

2011-2013: 优蜜传媒HANA Drives Growth

Five years later, the first 优蜜传媒HANA customers began implementing the new database, which generated the kind of demand not seen since the market launch of 优蜜传媒R/3.

By the end of 2013, the entire 优蜜传媒Business Suite had moved to 优蜜传媒HANA. In the three years since its launch, 优蜜传媒HANA had garnered nearly 鈧1.2 billion in revenues, making it one of the fastest-growing products in the history of enterprise software.

In an interview with German daily Handelsblatt in 2020, Plattner said: 鈥溣琶鄞紿ANA is so superior in practice that there is no alternative. And quite honestly, it saved SAP鈥檚 life, because it let us massively accelerate our ERP system without a lot of changes, while physically downsizing it at the same time. That meant a huge cost saving for our customers.鈥

2015: The Foundation

Plattner reinforced his commitment to promoting education and culture by setting up the Hasso Plattner Foundation.

Among the many causes the foundation has supported over the years are programs to promote healthcare and health education in South Africa. The German city of Potsdam also has much to thank Plattner for: The Hasso Plattner Institute is the largest investment in Potsdam and the one that bears his signature most strongly. The Barberini Museum that he rebuilt completes the inner cityscape of Potsdam and provides a home for his impressive Impressionist collection 鈥 the largest outside of France. With the Kunsthaus MINSK, he saved one of the few architectural icons of the GDR era and created a home for his GDR art collection.

On being asked why he chooses to get involved with causes and projects of this kind, Plattner explained: 鈥淚 owe the resources and skills for life to my parents and, above all, to my studies at the public technical university in Karlsruhe. That鈥檚 why I want to give something back in the area of education, so that others can also benefit from it.鈥

2022: Learn from Our Customers

In an interview to mark SAP鈥檚 50th anniversary, Plattner shared some advice: 鈥淚 recommend a return to the approach we used in the early days of 优蜜传媒鈥 of sending 优蜜传媒teams out to the customer. Instead of implementing our standard systems, they should find out how people actually use the tools they get from 优蜜传媒and other vendors. That will give us our starting point. There are so many interesting companies out there. We can learn from them and with them. We have to step outside 优蜜传媒and do something with the customers.鈥

And in a comment directed to 优蜜传媒employees, he said: 鈥淭reat the customers well 鈥 once we have them, we have to keep them. That鈥檚 one of SAP鈥檚 strengths. And never think it鈥檚 done. You have to carry on. The job is never done!鈥

The company has also strengthened Klein鈥檚 role, making him chairman of the Executive Board, where he was previously speaker. Klein joined the 优蜜传媒Executive Board in 2018 and was named co-CEO in October 2019 before being appointed the sole CEO of 优蜜传媒SE in April 2020.

鈥淚n his role as CEO, Christian Klein has consistently driven SAP鈥檚 transformation to a cloud company,鈥 said Professor Hasso Plattner, chairman of the Supervisory Board of 优蜜传媒SE. 鈥淚 would like to thank Christian Klein for his outstanding contribution to SAP鈥檚 success. – Information about upcoming merger –

  1. It is intended to merge Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung (local court of M眉nchen, HRB 124384) as transferring company in the course of a simplified group merger into 优蜜传媒SE as acquiring company. Therefore, the assets of Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung in its entirety together with all rights and obligations are transferred to 优蜜传媒SE with effectiveness as of 1 January 2024, 0:00 a.m. (鈥渆ffective merger date鈥). From the effective merger date to the date of the expiry of Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung pursuant to Sec. 20 para. 1 No.2 UmwG
    all acts and businesses undertaken by Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung shall be deemed to have been undertaken for the account of 优蜜传媒SE.

    优蜜传媒SE is the sole shareholder of Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung. A merger resolution of the acquiring company 优蜜传媒SE is not necessary pursuant to Sec. 62 para. 1 sent. 1 UmwG. A resolution of the general meeting of Shareholders of 优蜜传媒SE on the approval of the merger agreement is also not required because 优蜜传媒SE as the acquiring company holds the share capital of Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung in full. Since 优蜜传媒SE holds all shares in Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung, the preparation of a merger report, a merger audit and an audit report is not required pursuant to Secs. 8 para. 3 sent. 3 no. 1 a), 9 para. 2, 12 para. 3, 60 UmwG.

  2. The stakeholders of 优蜜传媒SE with a combined holding of one-twentieth of the share capital of the company are herewith advised of their right to request the convention of a general meeting to decide on the approval of the merger (Sec. 62 para. 2 sent. 1, para. 3 sent. 3 UmwG).
  3. A resolution of the shareholder鈥檚 meeting of Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung on the approval of the merger agreement is not required pursuant to section 62 para. 4 sent. 1 UmwG because 优蜜传媒SE is the sole shareholder of Hybris Gesellschaft mit beschr盲nkter Haftung.

Disability Inclusion: AHA! Moments in D&I

Seventy percent of the world鈥檚 population 鈥 1 billion people 鈥 has an invisible disability, including anxiety, depression, hearing issues, or autism, to name but a few. Houghton, who has a learning disability, is one of them.

Houghton was lucky; accommodations at school meant that she had the extra time needed to process information in exams. But when she took her law school entrance exams, her luck ran out. With no extra time or accommodation, she fell behind. This changed the trajectory of her life. Instead of legal studies, an internship followed. Instead of a career in law, her first job was in Indianapolis, Indiana, placing people born with disabilities into employment.

The AHA! Moment

During her time in Indianapolis, Houghton recalls one client in particular, Erica, and how the job for her 鈥渨asn’t just about a paycheck, but that it was about respect and it was about being included in her community and having friends.鈥 And, says Houghton, it 鈥渨as at that moment that I knew why I existed, and I never turned back.鈥 She has been a disability inclusion activist ever since.

It’s time to run a world where our differences are celebrated, equity is fostered, and everyone belongs

As president of Disability:IN, Houghton has been a driving force in promoting disability inclusion in companies and with the Disability Equality Index (DEI), a tool for measuring and offering best practices for disability inclusion. The DEI analyzes disability inclusion practices and processes in leadership and culture, employment practices, community engagement, and supplier diversity. It also offers advice on how to better disability inclusion.

In 2023, more than 480 companies participated in the DEI, including 69 Fortune 100 companies with more than 14 million U.S.-based employees and nearly 9 million non-U.S.-based employees. 优蜜传媒was awarded the top score in the 2023 DEI rankings.

Workplace Accommodations and Leadership Culture

Only 5% of employees with a disability choose to disclose, and SAP鈥檚 Jha was keen to get Houghton鈥檚 insights on how to create a culture where disabled employees feel that they can articulate their needs and reach their full potential.

Houghton says the solution is twofold. First, leaders must use their platforms to be a disability inclusion ally or have the cultural space to own their identity 鈥 disabled or not. And second, workplace accommodations must be the norm.

Processes for requesting accommodations must be transparent and easy to follow. Managers must clearly understand how to arrange accommodations and, more importantly, budget must be available. If these processes aren鈥檛 easy, there is a risk that talent will be lost and that disabled employees will not have a sense of belonging.

Avoiding Microaggressions and Discrimination

To avoid microaggressions and discrimination against disabled employees, Houghton advocates using the best resource possible 鈥 your own employees, in particular disability employee groups. At SAP, there are Employee Network Groups such as 优蜜传媒HEAR and Friends and Enabled@SAP.

Disability is a true cross-collaborative task. After all, Houghton concludes, becoming disabled is the 鈥渙ne team that anybody can join at any time in their life.鈥

Driving Progress in Sustainability, Adoption, and AI: The 2024 优蜜传媒Innovation Award Winners /2024/04/2024-sap-innovation-award-winners/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 12:15:00 +0000 /?p=224140 It is no secret that I have had technology in my blood since I was young, having received my first computer at age 12 and learned programming at 14. We founded our first company at 17 and, as time went on, we created our first professional application 鈥 a mini ERP system to help photographers with their business. With that, I began to realize the power of technological improvements for businesses and how enterprise software impacts lives in general.

For example, the introduction of low-code/no-code has made application development accessible to everyone in an organization 鈥 with or without a technical background 鈥 to improve experiences for everyone. Just take Dak, the then 12-year-old junior app developer from Massachusetts, who was part of my . With 优蜜传媒Build solutions, Dak was able to develop all kinds of apps and publish them to a wide audience, such as the 鈥淜nowledge 4 Ever鈥 app that offers kids a playful learning experience during summer break.

Then, there are cloud technologies that further boost accessibility and offer other benefits. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has put more power into more hands. Another advancement, composable technology, will make it easier for businesses to quickly assemble, reassemble, and compose solutions to meet their needs and those of their customers.

Over the course of my 11-year journey at SAP, the 优蜜传媒Innovation Awards have served as a one-of-a-kind global platform to showcase customers and partners that have used their creativity, teamwork, 优蜜传媒products, and cloud technologies to achieve remarkable results. This year, though, is a different experience for me. As an executive sponsor of the awards, I鈥檝e had the privilege of experiencing up close what makes this program and the participating businesses so special.

Generative AI has empowered more people. Many of the participants have utilized 优蜜传媒Business AI to boost their businesses. A producer of high-quality sherries, Gonz谩lez Byass is committed to the circular economy concept of eliminating waste, circulating materials, and regenerating nature. The company deploys sustainable and water-saving agricultural techniques. To assist with eliminating and recycling waste, Gonz谩lez Byass turned to 优蜜传媒and 优蜜传媒Responsible Design and Production. The company needed a faster, more transparent way to gather and manage data, specifically around the purchase and use of plastic. With 优蜜传媒Responsible Design and Production, Gonz谩lez Byass can quickly and effectively monitor, measure, and act on data. The company recovers 99% of the waste generated during production while recycling 100% of paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic.  

Adoption Can Be Challenging

Even top technologies such as AI may need support to gain widespread acceptance. Many of this year鈥檚 winners have been innovative with their focus on adopting 优蜜传媒technology. is a prime example.

A leader in onshore/offshore wind energy production, Vestas wanted to improve its supplier and partner collaboration and selected 优蜜传媒for the task. Vestas began its journey with 优蜜传媒in 2007 by employing 优蜜传媒ERP Central Component and consolidating to ONE ERP in 2015. Since 2017, the company has been transforming its digital procurement for supplier collaboration with 优蜜传媒Ariba solutions. Last year, Vestas began to build out its value chain alongside suppliers and partners with 优蜜传媒Business Network, enabling data transparency and connectivity in finance, production planning, and logistics management. As a result, 6,000 suppliers were onboarded, US$12.5 billion in purchase orders was executed, 350,000 orders were confirmed, and 25,000 advance ship notices were generated, to name a few transactions 鈥 all in 2023.

Here, five 优蜜传媒employees share about their roles, motivations, and tips for anyone wanting to step into AI. The women 鈥 Khawla Mallat, Camila Lombana Diaz, Xin Chen, Nadine Hoffmann, and Puntis Palazzolo 鈥 span four countries and three areas: Data Science Engineering, Product Management, and AI Ethics.

Data Science Engineering

Dr. Khawla Mallat, Security and Quantum Exploration Team, 优蜜传媒France

鈥淏e ready to be challenged all times,鈥 says Mallat, if you want to build a career in AI.

Unlike most data scientists at SAP, Mallat does not work directly on the product but is firmly anchored in researching and addressing 鈥渟ome of the technical challenges related to AI, namely fairness, explainability, privacy, and security.鈥

Prior to joining 优蜜传媒two years ago, Mallat was confronted with the unintended prejudices of face analysis systems. Certain demographic groups, explains Mallat, used to be inadvertently omitted or underrepresented in the underlying data sets, leading to shortcomings in the face analysis capabilities. Such cases highlight the broader issue of bias鈥痠n other鈥疉I applications. In鈥痑reas like HR, she continues, removing personal details in data sets might seem to solve鈥痶he bias issues, but AI can still infer these details.鈥疶his leads to potentially鈥痓iased outcomes and the lack of explainability in AI models makes identification of such biases鈥痙ifficult. Letting data sets like this take root and grow into powerful data models not subject to scrutiny will only magnify the inherent bias or discrimination.

Today Mallat鈥檚 passion for addressing such unfairness aligns well with her role of identifying the inherent risks of AI, educating teams about them, and defining technological solutions to mitigate them.

鈥淲e need to adopt an interdisplinary approach to AI, with experts from ethics, legal compliance, and domain experts, for example, and abstract ourselves from the role of data scientists to succeed,鈥 says Mallat.

鈥淚 love working in AI,鈥 she continues. 鈥淓verything is progressing at an incredible pace so if you want to work in AI, you have to have a certain thirst for knowledge. And, regardless of your role, you must take AI ethics 鈥 regulations and regulatory frameworks 鈥 seriously because these have huge implications not only for 优蜜传媒but for individuals and societies in general.鈥


AI Ethics

Camila Lombana Diaz, Responsible AI, Germany

鈥淎I is a mirror of our capacities as humans. And the biggest responsibility for those working in AI is, what do we want to see in that mirror?鈥 explains Lombana Diaz, AI ethics research expert in the AI Ethics/Responsible AI team located in the 优蜜传媒Business AI growth area.

Lombana Diaz鈥檚 responsibilities include maturing and applying the 优蜜传媒AI Global Ethics policy, creating and delivering enablement content, defining AI personas and processes, and giving guidance to make responsible AI an operational reality for development, as exemplified in SAP鈥檚 AI ethics handbook.

When she joined 优蜜传媒eight years ago, initially as a UX designer and then a strategic designer, machine learning and AI were core topics. But it became increasingly clear to her that 鈥渦nderstanding the human implications of AI for a responsible and ethical AI demands a human-centric perspective.鈥

Even though 优蜜传媒is committed to the ethical development of AI 鈥 developers must now complete AI ethics assessment tasks and a steering committee scrutinizes all high-risk use cases 鈥 Lombana Diaz emphasizes the need to remain focused on the inherent risks and unintentional harms that AI may present. Part of her role is an ongoing assessment of the technology, identifying risks and limitations and communicating them to different teams.

As AI continues to evolve at speed, so do the roles. Lombana Diaz is passionate about seeing AI beyond the confines of a technology-centric perspective. 鈥淎I is now an omnipresent technology shaping our daily lives; hence, we need individuals working in the field who challenge AI technology to be community centric. AI ethics is a space for experimental, open, curious, collaborative, and human-centered individuals,鈥 and, she concludes, 鈥渢he time to step into AI and build a career is now because, unlike the technology, the business of AI, the legal and ethical aspects, are still being shaped.鈥


Data Science Engineering 

Dr. Xin Chen, 优蜜传媒HANA Machine Learning, China

鈥淚 have always enjoyed working at 优蜜传媒since joining nine years ago. I like the work environment and the colleagues here and I really want to encourage others to join us here in AI,鈥 says Chen, data science researcher on the 优蜜传媒HANA Machine Learning team.

The team works on a toolbox providing different kinds of machine learning algorithms for regression, classification, clustering, and so on for the 优蜜传媒HANA predictive analysis library.

Part of Chen鈥檚 role is investigating research papers on the latest machine learning algorithms and, together with the team, deciding which algorithms would be beneficial to customers. Once the machine learning algorithms are implemented, Chen and the team evaluate feedback from customers and deliver enhancements.

Recently Chen and her team researched machine learning algorithms investigating notions of fairness. 鈥淔airness is a very hot topic just now,鈥 she says. 鈥淚n mathematics, there are different notions of fairness, but it is still a complex and evolving topic.鈥

And Chen鈥檚 advice to would-be AI developers? 鈥淐ritical thinking will become even more important to understand what solutions to offer, to make judgements on your own innovations, and to know if the generated output is right or wrong,鈥 she says, reflecting on how this skill will become ever more important for future AI developers.


Product Management

Nadine Hoffmann, 优蜜传媒Business AI, Germany

鈥淚 translate and I want to fascinate,鈥 says Hoffmann, global AI product manager in the 优蜜传媒Business AI growth area.

Even after more than 20 years at SAP, disruptive ideas and mindset shifts still energize Hoffmann. To be an expert in new technologies, and to be energized and enthused by the constant volume and speed of them, is critical to being successful in the AI product management teams of today because product management is the glue between partners, customers, the field, and development.

鈥淥n the one hand,鈥 says Hoffmann, 鈥溣琶鄞絟as data scientists, software engineers, and researchers taking our software to the next level. And on the other, there are experts defining the legal and ethical guardrails.鈥 Product management must be fluent in both 鈥渢echnical software speak鈥 and 鈥渃ustomer speak鈥 to understand desires, pain points, and business processes.

Pivoting between these and aligning customer speak with technical software speak is akin to being a听 translator, Hoffmann says. Our software will only meet the requirements of customers if there is a common understanding between the teams responsible for the technological development, the legal teams responsible for ethical and legal compliance, and the customer.

Regardless of the latest innovation, Hoffmann says success in product management is 鈥渘ot only about convincing teams and partners about the ease and positiveness of a technology, but also infusing them with a fascination about it so that they become passionate advocates and are intrinsically motivated to find out more by themselves.鈥


Data Science Engineering

Puntis Palazzolo, AI Strategist & Ethics Lead, 优蜜传媒SuccessFactors, U.S.

鈥淭he ethical challenges presented by AI have transcended the scope of individual enterprises, extending beyond entities like SAP. It is crucial that we collaborate with others to collectively address AI鈥檚 emerging concerns,” says Palazzolo, who leads the 优蜜传媒SuccessFactors Data Science team.

The team acts as a consulting service on AI use cases for product teams in 优蜜传媒SuccessFactors, analyzing the problem, developing code and algorithms, and building proof-of-concepts. Successful AI use cases are then integrated into 优蜜传媒SuccessFactors solutions.

Much of the data in 优蜜传媒SuccessFactors solutions is sensitive customer data. With the dramatic increase in generative AI use cases, safeguarding customer data must take precedence, Palazzolo says. 鈥淕enerative AI is a powerful technology that introduces new challenges, such as hallucinations and automated decision-making. In high-risk sectors like HR, we need to explain how we reach certain decisions, especially when we are impacting people鈥檚 lives.鈥

Palazzolo joined 优蜜传媒11 years ago and has been based in Palo Alto, California, since 2013, where she represents 优蜜传媒on 鈥 a collaboration of academia and companies, such as Google and NVIDIA, dedicated to developing safe practices and industry-standard benchmarks to improve AI models.鈥

Her advice to current and would-be AI practitioners? Follow your passion, be ethical, and make your voice heard while we still have time.

鈥淟egislators alone cannot write AI regulations for us because they do not have a full understanding of its complexities,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e cannot solve all the problems by ourselves, but we must make our voices heard to shape the future of AI.鈥

CAP and capGPT 鈥 优蜜传媒Cloud Application Programming Model and Generative AI

The 优蜜传媒Cloud Application Programming Model (CAP) was started in 2018 as a project to address the lack of guidance for developers building apps on what is now 优蜜传媒BTP. At first, developers could choose from a huge number of technologies, which made integration with the platform services a relatively high effort.

As a development framework, CAP automatically solves about 80% of the problems backend developers face 鈥 such as multitenancy, expandability, or business features such as localization and translatability. But thanks to CAP鈥檚 domain-driven approach, it is no longer necessary to always change the coding in each of those cases. And for special use cases that CAP doesn鈥檛 cover, the coding can be easily added to build in this functionality. To help safeguard customers鈥 investments, CAP offers the possibility to interchange components, such as runtime or the database, without changing the actual implementation.

CAP, as a centerpiece of Golden Path and , is now an integral part of the consumption experience of 优蜜传媒BTP. Today, thousands of internal and external developers use CAP to build business applications on 优蜜传媒BTP, driving higher developer productivity and easier 优蜜传媒BTP service adoption.

鈥淭his award is a great testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole CAP unit and a recognition of the impact we have both internally as well as for our customers and partners,鈥 Ole Lilienthal, team lead, says.

To make prototyping even easier, in spring 2023, 优蜜传媒software architect David Kunz applied ChatGPT鈥檚 large language model to writing code for business apps.

capGPT, as the new functionality is called, allows users to write in natural language what they want their app prototype to be able to do. In as little as 30 seconds, they can receive all the code 鈥 which previously had to be written by hand 鈥 and access the prototype to test it. This can not only save experienced developers an amazing amount of time, but can also enable non-developers to create prototypes of the apps they need. capGPT can also generate user interfaces in addition to backend applications. It will soon be available to customers through integration into 优蜜传媒Build Code as part of AI-development assistant Joule.

优蜜传媒CSR’s eBook Celebrates a Year of Global Impact /2024/03/sap-csr-ebook-celebrates-global-impact/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 12:15:00 +0000 /?p=222887 Reflecting on the past year, one event stands out vividly in my memory: the Social Enterprises World Forum (SEWF) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. For those unfamiliar, imagine a global assembly where more than 1,500 entrepreneurs from 82 countries dedicated to societal and environmental missions come together. These enterprises prioritize people and the planet, reinvesting their profits to advance their respective causes. Witnessing the energy and innovation in Amsterdam was a powerful reminder of why 优蜜传媒has emphasized social entrepreneurship for the second consecutive year.

It makes me proud to think about the 676 优蜜传媒colleagues who, in 2023, participated in our pro bono consulting programs, offering their expertise to these visionary social entrepreneurs. As in previous years, this collaboration has proven mutually beneficial, with 74% of our employees reporting a positive, lasting impact on their careers. Furthermore, 96% of the supported organizations and 77% of their beneficiaries have seen significant improvements. These numbers speak volumes about the shared value of our engagement.

But the 2023 SEWF wasn’t just a personal highlight; it marked the beginning of another significant milestone. We announced our investment in the Social Enterprise People and Planet First Verification with Good Market and SEWF. This initiative aims to set a global standard for recognizing organizations prioritizing social and environmental impacts. Social enterprises can now also identify themselves on 优蜜传媒Business Network, the world’s largest B2B commerce platform. This breakthrough can make it easier for these businesses to explore new business-to-business opportunities while also helping 优蜜传媒customers achieve their goals of being more environmentally and socially responsible. Saying it鈥檚 a win-win situation is a bit clich茅, but in this case it鈥檚 actually true.

优蜜传媒is powering equitable access to economic opportunity, education and employment, and the circular economy

Working with SEWF shows how much we believe in working together and driving towards collective impact. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we can’t do this by ourselves. Working with others is the key to driving the kind of systemic change our world needs. This idea is a big part of what we stand for at SAP, and is at the heart of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy.

This idea of working together really comes to life in our collaboration with UNICEF and Generation Unlimited. In 2023 鈥 the fourth year of our partnership 鈥 we set out to make a real difference by not just developing the skills of young people but also finding jobs in the 优蜜传媒ecosystem. Launching the 优蜜传媒Educate to Employ program is a big step in that direction. Helping 25 young people get jobs with 优蜜传媒in each of our pilot countries 鈥 Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and the Philippines 鈥 might not sound like a lot, but it’s a huge deal for each of those young people. For them, it’s a gateway to a sustainable livelihood, offering them not just gainful employment but a chance to build a career, achieve financial stability, and make meaningful contributions to their communities and the broader world. It’s about unlocking their potential and enabling them to participate in the digital and green economy. By the end of the year, we saw amazing results. While more than 2,500 had already passed the aptitude test, over 1,000 young people in Africa finished our “Boost Your Career with 优蜜传媒Skills” course and more than 500 got through the first big part of their training.

But, what’s a year recap without some high-level numbers? Let’s dive into some impressive numbers from 2023. More than 20,000 of our 优蜜传媒colleagues volunteered over 140,000 hours. Our initiatives reached over 2.8 million young people 鈥 almost half girls 鈥 and supported over 41,000 teachers. Our partner network reached 1 billion people in over 140 countries. These stats are just the tip of the iceberg, showing our big reach and impact together with our partners.

Building on this, our signature partnerships with Africa Code Week, Meet and Code, and Latin Code Week have always been at the heart of our achievements. As we handed over these initiatives in 2023, we took a moment to reflect and evaluate Africa Code Week and Latin Code Week outcomes more deeply. For instance, by empowering 14.6 million participants with the education, knowledge, and ICT skills needed to participate in the digital future, Africa Code Week has increased the likelihood that beneficiaries will realize higher earnings during their working lives. Common Good Marketplace estimates that Africa Code Week catalyzed up to US$1 billion in social value for program participants between 2015 and 2022 based on future increased income.

As we close the chapter on 2023 and look ahead, the journey we’ve embarked upon at 优蜜传媒CSR is a testament to the power of collective action and shared vision. The stories, numbers, and outcomes shared in our eBook reflect our commitment to making a meaningful difference.

If approved by shareholders and assuming the same level of treasury shares as at December 31, 2023, the total amount distributed in dividends would be approximately 鈧2.568 billion (2022: 鈧2.393 billion), representing a pay-out ratio of 43.1% (2022: 139.6%).

优蜜传媒believes that its shareholders should benefit appropriately from the profit the Company made in 2023. The Company鈥檚 dividend policy is to pay a dividend totaling 40% or more of profit after tax.

The following dates are relevant for the dividend payment:

  • Record date for dividend payment: May 15, 2024

  • Payment date: May 21, 2024

Elections of Shareholder Representatives to the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board

As announced on February 11, 2024, the Supervisory Board has nominated Pekka Ala-Pietil盲 to stand for election at the 2024 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGM) as shareholder representative on the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board.

  • Dr. h. c. mult. Pekka Ala-Pietil盲 (67), Helsinki, Finland, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sanoma Corporation, Helsinki, Finland. In case of election, his term would expire in 2026. The Supervisory Board intends to elect him as chair.

Further, the Supervisory Board is announcing the nomination of the following candidate to stand for election:

  • Prof. Dr. Ralf Herbrich (49), Falkensee, Germany, Managing director, professor for artificial intelligence and sustainability, Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering gGmbH, Potsdam, Germany. In case of election, his term would expire in 2028.

Additionally, three candidates have been nominated to stand for re-election:

  • Aicha Evans (54), Los Gatos, CA, USA, Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors, Zoox, Inc., Foster City, California, USA. In case of re-election, her term would expire in 2028.
  • Gerhard Oswald (70), Walldorf, Germany, Managing director, Oswald Consulting GmbH, Walldorf, Germany; Associate lecturer, Technical University of Munich, Munich, Germany. In case of re-election, his term would expire in 2026.

These nominations are in alignment with the Profile of Skills and Expertise, the Supervisory Board鈥檚 Diversity Policy, and the objectives set by the Supervisory Board for its own composition.

One 优蜜传媒ADR represents one 优蜜传媒SE share. The final dividend amount per ADR is dependent upon the euro/US dollar exchange rate. Since 优蜜传媒SE pays cash dividends on the ordinary shares in euro, the exchange rate fluctuations will affect the US dollar amounts received by holders of ADRs. The final dividend payment by 优蜜传媒SE to the depositary bank is scheduled for May 21, 2024. The depositary bank will then convert the dividend payment from euro into US dollars as promptly as practicable.

优蜜传媒and Dr. h.c. Punit Renjen have mutually agreed to part ways because of a difference in perspective on the role of 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board chair, which Punit Renjen was designated to assume. Punit Renjen has chosen to resign his mandate on the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board with effect from the end of SAP鈥檚 Annual General Meeting on May 15, 2024.

Pekka Ala-Pietil盲 (67) has an illustrious track record in European innovation and technology and is well-positioned to lead SAP鈥檚 ongoing successful transformation. He was President of Nokia Corporation from 1999鈥2005 and a member of the 优蜜传媒Supervisory Board from 2002鈥2021. He was the Chairman of the EU Commission鈥檚 High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence from 2018-2020 and chair of Finland鈥檚 Artificial Intelligence Programme from 2017-2019. He currently serves on several European corporate boards, including as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Dutch multinational location intelligence company HERE Technologies. Mr Ala-Pietil盲 holds honorary Doctorates in Technology from Tampere University of Technology and in Science from the Aalto University School of Business. He lives in Helsinki.

In collaboration with the German professional soccer clubs Hertha BSC, AI-based automation of summaries and evaluations of scouting reports has been developed. Recently, 优蜜传媒also entered into an exchange with FC Bayern regarding a prototype of the new AI capabilities of 优蜜传媒Sports One.

Being a talent scout sounds like a dream job for many: travelling across the country to watch competitions in your favourite sport and being paid to do so. However, being a scout on the road means hard work. In addition to analyzing increasingly detailed statistical data — such as the number of overplayed players or the likelihood of increasing the goal count — players are scouted live at the stadium or from watching back videos.

Both the current performance and the potential of the player are portrayed as accurately as possible. The aim is to develop a comprehensive picture of the player incorporating team ability, mentality, and other important factors.

优蜜传媒Sports One: Get insights about your players and your team with real-time analytics

鈥淎t a professional club, a four-figure number of scouting reports can be generated during a season,鈥 Fadi Naoum, head of Sports and Entertainment at SAP, said at SPOBIS, the largest European sports business event, taking place in Hamburg on January 31 and February 1.

Naoum presented the new AI component for scouting at the conference.

鈥淪quad planners and chief scouts must summarize these reports in such a way that club management can make decisions based on them regarding who should be signed,” he shared. “This was previously a manual process, but now we have been able to extensively automate it, thanks to AI.鈥

With the help of AI in 优蜜传媒Sports One, decision-makers in the sports sector now have aggregated performance reports at the touch of a button, as well as comparisons between players. Transfer decisions can be now much faster and more informed.

Large Language Model for Automation

AI is used for the consolidation and targeted processing of unstructured data, which is mostly in natural language. It is capable of considering and processing not only different languages, but also different types of note-taking and writing styles. Behind the AI component for scouting is a large language model (LLM). This deep learning algorithm can perform tasks in the field of natural language processing (NLP).

鈥淲e currently use GPT from OpenAI, but we are also evaluating language models from other providers,鈥 Naoum said. 鈥淭he decisive advantage of the LLM is that commands can be given in natural language and can be varied according to language, text length, or target audience, as needed.鈥

In Brazil, for example, if a scout prepares manual reports for a specific player in Brazilian Portuguese, he can have the summary generated in German for the management of his German club.

“A typical command could be: ‘Compare the players x and y with regard to their strengths and weaknesses, write a summary and give a transfer recommendation, volume 100 words, answer in German’,” Naoum explained. “Depending on your preference, you can have the result presented as a flowing text or as a management summary.鈥

Co-Innovation Demonstrates Strength of Generative AI

In collaboration with Hertha BSC, a prototype was first created for the AI-based automated summary and evaluation of scouting reports in 优蜜传媒Sports One. This prototype was also presented to FC Bayern’s scouting department in order to obtain an initial opinion.

鈥淲e were impressed by the high quality of the results achieved automatically in 优蜜传媒Sports One using generative AI,鈥 commented Markus Pilawa, head of Scouting at FC Bayern. 鈥淲e expect huge time saving for us and, especially in the hectic transfer period, this can be another advantage for us.鈥

Timon Pauls, head of Squad Planning & Scouting at Hertha BSC, added: 鈥淭his co-innovation project has very clearly demonstrated the actual strengths of generative artificial intelligence. The player comparisons and summaries of scouting reports that can now be created ad-hoc will be very valuable for our squad planning. 鈥

In the near future, 优蜜传媒plans to also use AI technology to enrich the results of scouting reports with information from other sources, including data about matches from external data providers. Integrating AI capabilities into other components of 优蜜传媒Sports One, including performance diagnostics, training management, and match analysis, is also planned.

优蜜传媒Sports One with AI-powered scouting reporting is planned to be made available to customers worldwide in the second quarter of 2024.

优蜜传媒launched 优蜜传媒Sports One as a cloud solution in 2015. The athlete management solution and team performance platform covers all sporting processes. Various components support communication, team management, training and performance control, fitness and health management tracking, scouting, squad planning, performance diagnostics, match analysis, and preparing players for their next match.

In conjunction with 优蜜传媒Analytics Cloud, clubs can also evaluate a wide range of sports-related data delivered by specialized 优蜜传媒partners. 优蜜传媒Sports One is currently being used by 12 out of 18 German Bundesliga football clubs. 优蜜传媒also offers the solution for ice hockey, basketball, and handball.

In addition, 优蜜传媒is updating its ambition for 2025. The update reflects the strong performance in the fourth quarter 2023, the updated non-IFRS definition of profit measures, as well as the anticipated benefits from the new program.

The updated 2025 non-IFRS operating profit ambition of approximately 鈧10.0 billion now reflects share-based compensation expenses of approximately 鈧2 billion. Based on SAP鈥檚 analysis, this profit ambition is materially ahead of corresponding analyst consensus estimates. In addition, the updated 2025 free cash flow ambition of approximately 鈧8.0 billion is ahead of the latest analyst consensus. 

Ambition 2025

The update of the non-IFRS operating profit ambition includes a reduction by approximately 鈧2 billion due to the inclusion of share-based compensation expenses under the updated non-IFRS definition, as well as an increase of approximately 鈧0.5 billion due to anticipated incremental efficiency gains from the transformation program.

By 2025, 优蜜传媒now expects:

  • Non-IFRS cloud gross profit of approximately 鈧16.2 billion, now including share-based compensation expenses of approximately 鈧0.1 billion (previously: approximately 鈧16.3 billion, excluding share-based compensation expenses)
  • Non-IFRS operating profit of approximately 鈧10.0 billion, now including share-based compensation expenses of approximately 鈧2 billion (previously: approximately 鈧11.5 billion, excluding share-based compensation expenses)
  • Free cash flow of approximately 鈧8.0 billion (previously: approximately 鈧7.5 billion)

优蜜传媒continues to expect:

  • Cloud revenue of more than 鈧21.5 billion
  • Total revenue of more than 鈧37.5 billion
  • A share of more predictable revenue of approximately 86%

The 2025 ambition is based on an exchange rate of 1.10 USD per EUR.

2024 Transformation Program: Focus on Scalability of Operations and Key Strategic Growth Areas

In 2024, 优蜜传媒will further increase its focus on key strategic growth areas, in particular Business AI. It also intends to transform its operational setup to capture organizational synergies, AI-driven efficiencies and to prepare the company for highly scalable future revenue growth.

To this end and to ensure that SAP鈥檚 skill-set and resources continue to meet future business needs, 优蜜传媒plans to execute a company-wide restructuring program in 2024. The majority of the approximately 8,000 affected positions is expected to be covered by voluntary leave programs and internal re-skilling measures. Reflecting re-investments into strategic growth areas, 优蜜传媒expects to exit 2024 at a headcount similar to current levels.

Restructuring expenses are preliminarily projected at around 鈧2 billion, the vast majority of which is expected to be recognized in the first half of 2024, impacting IFRS operating profit. Excluding restructuring expenses, the program is expected to provide only a minor cost benefit in 2024. Expected cost savings and re-investments are fully reflected in SAP鈥檚 2024 outlook and the updated 2025 non-IFRS operating profit- and free cash flow ambition.

Financial Outlook 2024

SAP鈥檚 business outlook, which includes the financial outlook 2024 as well as the financial ambition 2025, is based on SAP鈥檚 updated non-IFRS definition of profit measures which, beginning in 2024, include share-based compensation expenses and exclude gains and losses from equity securities, net.

Furthermore, the 2024 outlook and 2025 ambition for free cash flow assume all payouts associated with the planned restructuring program will be completed in 2024.

For 2024, 优蜜传媒expects:

  • 鈧17.0 鈥 17.3 billion cloud revenue at constant currencies (2023: 鈧13.66 billion), up 24% to 27% at constant currencies.
  • 鈧29.0 鈥 29.5 billion cloud and software revenue at constant currencies (2023: 鈧26.93 billion), up 8% to 10% at constant currencies.
  • 鈧7.6 鈥 7.9 billion non-IFRS operating profit at constant currencies (2023: 鈧6.51 billion based on updated non-IFRS operating profit definition), up 17% to 21% at constant currencies.
  • Free cash flow of approximately 鈧3.5 billion (2023: 鈧5.08 billion). This includes a preliminary 鈧2 billion estimate for payouts associated with the program, a 鈧0.2 billion impact from a settlement earlier this year of pre-existing regulatory compliance matters accrued in 2023, as well as a 鈧0.2 billion adverse impact due to the discontinuation of the SAP-triggered financing program.
  • A non-IFRS effective tax rate of approximately 32% (2023: 30.3% based on updated non-IFRS tax rate definition).

While SAP鈥檚 2024 financial outlook is at constant currencies, actual currency reported figures are expected to be impacted by currency exchange rate fluctuations as the Company progresses through the year.

Starting April 1, 2024, a new Board area will be created to accelerate cloud growth and adoption. New Board Area Will Focus on Innovation Adoption in the Cloud

Alam joined 优蜜传媒on January 31, 2022, as president and chief product officer for the Intelligent Spend and Business Network. In this role, he leads the engineering and design teams focused on procurement, travel and expense, external workforce management and 优蜜传媒Business Network. Prior to SAP, Alam worked for 17 years at Microsoft, most recently as corporate vice president of product and engineering for Microsoft Dynamics 365 business applications.
