Unlock new capabilities with generative AI

“IBM and SAP’s shared approach to generative AI, built on an open ecosystem, trust and purpose-built models, will help empower clients to听optimize business outcomes,” said听John Granger, Senior Vice President, IBM Consulting. “Our new Value Generation partnership initiative will enable clients to accelerate the path to innovation, competitive advantage and become a next generation enterprise through generative AI.”

  • Next-Generation AI Business Processes: Together, the companies are exploring opportunities to build new generative AI capabilities for RISE with 优蜜传媒and infuse AI into 优蜜传媒business processes across industry-specific cloud solutions and line of business applications. Initially, IBM plans to extend AI capabilities across SAP鈥檚 portfolio of cloud solutions and applications, all of which are underpinned by 优蜜传媒Business Technology Platform (优蜜传媒BTP). This includes RISE with SAP, the GROW with 优蜜传媒solution, financial solutions for the office of the CFO, supply chain management solutions,  solutions for human capital management, 优蜜传媒Customer Experience solutions and intelligent spend management solutions. IBM also plans to leverage 优蜜传媒Signavio and 优蜜传媒Business AI solutions to help define next-generation business processes through a proof-of-concept adoption program.
  • Next-Generation Industry Innovation: IBM and 优蜜传媒plan to build intelligent industry use cases, enabled by data-driven insights, into end-to-end business processes to fuel next-generation industry innovation. These use cases will initially focus on the industrial manufacturing, consumer packaged goods (CPG), retail, defense, automotive and utilities industries. This includes IBM鈥檚 recent work with 优蜜传媒to develop new AI solutions for the CPG and retail industries. As part of this initiative, IBM has begun the development of an extensive portfolio of over 100 AI solutions across industry, line-of-business and product delivery. In addition, IBM plans to develop prescriptive industry value maps that define next-generation business processes and opportunities for impact with AI. Clients will be able to access all of these new AI solutions through the global and sites.
  • Next-Generation Platform Architecture and Customer Adoption Approach: Next-generation enterprises require next-generation platform architectures and a modernized approach to customer adoption. Through the Value Generation partnership initiative, IBM intends to provide next-generation reference architectures that enable a clean core approach. To do this, IBM plans to leverage 优蜜传媒BTP, 优蜜传媒Signavio and  LeanIX solutions. These new reference architectures will help define standards across data, process, systems and device integration, process orchestration and automation. IBM consultants supporting clients on 优蜜传媒projects can also leverage IBM Consulting Advantage, IBM鈥檚 AI services platform, and its portfolio of proprietary methods, assets and Assistants to bring more repeatability and consistency to client delivery.  With IBM Consulting Advantage, IBM consultants can transform the way they deliver 优蜜传媒solutions to boost productivity and mitigate risk by leveraging generative AI to help complete tasks like generation of user stories, test scripts, training and change management content and code creation.
  • Next-Generation Ecosystem Expansion: IBM and 优蜜传媒plan to partner around their respective employee network groups and 鈥渘ext-gen鈥 communities, such as the business women鈥檚 networks at IBM and SAP, the program and the program of 优蜜传媒and Veterans at IBM to increase the 优蜜传媒solutions experience in the consulting workforce and develop the next generation of talent. The companies also plan to explore new ways to collaborate on social impact programs, such as training at- risk youth in the IT sector and accelerating the integration of social businesses into global supply chains.
  • watsonx Planned Availability on the Generative AI Hub: IBM Granite Model Series are expected to be accessible for use across SAP鈥檚 portfolio of cloud solutions and applications 鈥 which is underpinned by the generative AI hub in 优蜜传媒AI Core. The generative AI hub facilitates relevant, reliable and responsible business AI and provides instant access to a broad range of large language models (LLMs). This expands on IBM and SAP鈥檚 collaboration around . To further highlight watsonx.ai Granite capabilities, IBM Consulting plans to build extensions using the model on the generative AI hub for select customers.

A Quantum-Inspired Solution for Enterprise Optimization /2024/03/quantum-inspired-computing-enterprise-optimization/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 12:15:00 +0000 /?p=223144 Quantum computing reports are still working up steam, but error correction remains elusive. Research into quantum computing has yielded many positive results, in quantum computing and also improvements in classical algorithms. In addition, it has inspired new hardware that potentially improves how businesses will optimize. Last year, 优蜜传媒and Fujitsu collaborated to test out Fujitsu鈥檚 new quantum-inspired Digital Annealer Unit (DAU).

If you ask a quantum researcher what keeps them awake at night, error correction might be their likely answer. And so, while quantum computing still makes great strides, the quantum advantage can sometimes be overstated in the press. To mitigate this, however, a new type of quantum-inspired computing is coming of age. What started as simulated annealing has given rise to dedicated simulated annealing machines. These typically work on optimization problems, finding the best way to do something.

Harnessing Fujitsu鈥檚 Digital Annealer Unit for Efficient Optimization

(DAU) is a quantum-inspired machine. It works by finding the optimal combination when presented with a list of possible combinations, and it works fast. Last year, 优蜜传媒ran a proof of concept with Fujitsu to test and benchmark its DAU 鈥 with some promising results.

优蜜传媒is continuously exploring new ideas, business models, and pioneering technologies

As mentioned in a recent , the DAU was tested against some rather abstract but standardized research problems from the (QPLIB). We also tested the possibility to seamlessly integrate 优蜜传媒solutions with the DAU, proving a simple execution to start. As a result, 优蜜传媒was able to demonstrate that the DAU has real potential and marks an important milestone in the progress of quantum-inspired computing towards practical, real-world, standard business solutions. We are currently working with Fujitsu to extend this potential to other optimization problems, like creating more efficient for manufacturing, , and ultimately an even broader use case application.

While still a proof of concept, these connections and benchmarking results demonstrate the potential for simulated annealing to deliver on real-world problems, such as balancing the load across all manufacturing tool sets, by using the DAU as a machine dedicated to the task of optimization, rather than a universally reprogrammable computer.

Benchmarking Against Current Optimization Methods

Before committing more resources, 优蜜传媒wanted to test the DAU against problems that serve as industry or academic standards for optimization. This is where the QPLIB comes in. It is essentially a huge repository of math problems, none of which are mapped to potential use cases but all of which can determine what kind of problems the DAU might excel at. The advantage of this approach is that it allows us to benchmark against current optimization methods, although the use case context has been removed. Take the example of a drug trial, where scientists test the new drug in test tubes against drugs already on the market. It may not show side effects, but it will show whether it鈥檚 worth risking trials on living subjects.

The DAU takes a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem as its input, which sets up the cost-benefit matrix. It then outputs a string of 1鈥檚 and 0鈥檚, telling the user whether it is optimal to include, for example, a unit of stock, where the variance is to be minimized. The key is that it must either be faster or output a more optimal solution.

Most quantum computers run their . Fujitsu鈥檚 approach was inspired by quantum annealing, a technique that specializes entirely in optimization. Although quantum annealing makes great progress in the number of qubits (quantum bits), it is subject to similar limitations of error. The advantage of Fujitsu鈥檚 quantum-inspired approach is that it relies on existing hardware, eliminating the need for expensive cryogenic cooling.

It is SAP鈥檚 sincere hope that this quantum-inspired optimization can help our customers bridge the optimization gaps until quantum hardware becomes more reliable. The incorporation of Fujitsu’s DAU into 优蜜传媒technology helps establish a platform designed to tackle the impending gaps in the years ahead. This remarkable advancement is a key achievement in SAP’s journey towards the next era of enterprise software, aiming to enhance business operations and foster value creation.

Today, the network is 23-strong across the globe, including three SAP-driven and 19 partner-driven locations.  

At the heart of is the belief that innovation requires a multidisciplinary team, a creative environment, and a human-centered approach to ensure innovation meets real-world needs. This combines design thinking and architecture thinking to make sure solutions are experientially desirable, technologically feasible, and financially viable. Digital Eco-Farming: How 优蜜传媒Japan Helps Revitalize Rural Communities /2024/02/minano-digital-eco-farm-sap-japan-revitalize-rural-communities/ Wed, 21 Feb 2024 12:15:00 +0000 /?p=222786 With rural population in decline, many communities in the Japanese countryside struggle to continue farming and harvesting their land. and in Japan launched a co-innovation project to help the town of Minano revitalize its community.

Like other industrial nations, Japan has been facing massive demographic challenges in its agriculture sector. An aging population and a lack of younger individuals entering the sector to replace them have led to farms being abandoned and fields lying fallow.

Japan鈥檚 government has realized the demographical issue, of course, as it touches not only the agricultural sector. To revitalize rural areas and stem the rural exodus, the government launched a national action plan.

In alignment with this action plan, 优蜜传媒Japan has joined the effort of encouraging rural communities to thrive by launching a co-innovation project with PSI, an 优蜜传媒partner, and the local government of the town of Minano.

Digitizing the Agricultural Sector

The small town of Minano is located in the hills of Saitama Prefecture, about two hours from Tokyo. While the south of this prefecture is largely a suburb of the Tokyo area, the west, approaching Mt. Fuji, is still very rural and thinly populated. A former center of silk industry, the region on average is sunny and warm but can get lots of snow in winter.

鈥淔arms in this area are traditionally small and dispersed, located between forests and mountains,鈥 says Yoshihisa Horiguchi, chairman of MINNANO Future Create. 鈥淏ig supermarkets and retailers overlook them. Nowadays, the farmers cultivate rice and vegetables in small amounts to consume themselves, sell to their neighbors, or send to their children or grandchildren that live in cities.鈥

Since 1950, Minano has lost roughly one-third of its population, largely due to the decline of the agricultural sector. Today, it counts about 10,000 inhabitants.

鈥淵oung people often migrate to urban areas for better education and employment opportunities,鈥 Horiguchi explains. 鈥淲here 50 years ago, a farm may have relied on 20 young workers, now only two elderly workers are left.鈥

Digitization is one obvious approach that may help prevent those areas from depopulating completely.

鈥淏ut while large-scale farms benefit from the economic feasibility of applying robotics and the like, it is financially and logistically challenging to apply such technologies to small-scale dispersed farms,鈥 Horiguchi says.

Horiguchi, the owner of an automotive parts manufacturing company, co-founded the local initiative MINNANO Future Create in 2019 to solve the challenges resulting from population loss. Its members range from elderly individuals to young residents, forming a diverse group of individuals, including pharmacists, architectural designers, and other professions, all living in the town.

For one of its projects, the Minano Digital Eco Farm, it partnered with 优蜜传媒Co-Innovation Lab.

IoT Solution for Monitoring Agriculture

The Minano Digital Eco Farm project aims to build a communication platform that connects farmers and urban residents as well as small-scale dispersed farms to major supply chains, forming a portfolio that coexists with existing large-scale farms. In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the project will help overcome supply chain disruptions due to food shortages and crop failures due to abnormal weather, conflicts, disasters, and more.

For this vision to become a reality, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors were distributed in various locations and managed remotely from headquarters.

Tap the power of 优蜜传媒BTP to integrate and connect landscapes

鈥淭he idea was to have an IoT solution running on 优蜜传媒Business Technology Platform (优蜜传媒BTP) that would help monitor all the agricultural processes,鈥 says Atsushi Minakuchi, senior solution specialist at 优蜜传媒Co-Innovation Lab in Japan.

优蜜传媒Co-Innovation Lab partnered with PSI, which brought in the Digital Material Controller (DMC), an all-in-one compact edge controlling server that enables easy setup of a ubiquitous IoT environment. And, due to the cooperation with 优蜜传媒Co-Innovation Lab, the DMC has also obtained 优蜜传媒certification.

鈥淢any IoT sensors lack cybersecurity functions,鈥 Mitsuhiro Yamazaki, senior advisor and former president of PSI, says. 鈥淗owever, by connecting sensors to a DMC with cybersecurity capabilities, it becomes possible to securely store locally collected data on the DMC, safely transmit to 优蜜传媒BTP, and accumulate, analyze, and utilize data from the DMC. This enables seamless and easy integration between the 优蜜传媒core system and the IoT system.鈥

鈥淐ollaboration with 优蜜传媒Co-Innovation Lab has significantly expanded the application possibilities of DMC,鈥 Masaki Fukui, former PSI Cyber Security Lab director and now with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, says. 鈥淕lobal users of 优蜜传媒now could have the opportunity to easily implement and utilize a ubiquitous supply chain platform through the combination of DMC and 优蜜传媒BTP.鈥

Through integration with 优蜜传媒BTP, the deployment locations can then be displayed and monitored on a dashboard.

The idea is for citizens living in the city to enter a service contract with a rural farm or supplier and to connect via a technology platform to remotely monitor and support agricultural processes. In return, they receive part of the crops 鈥 freshly delivered to their homes in the city.

So far, two proofs of concept for farms have been completed between March 2019 and November 2022, as well as one proof of concept for a miso factory. Agriculture and rural industry are only two fields of application. Future projects could include schools, hospitals, stores, and elder care facilities.

Strengthening Rural Appeal for Inland Tourism

As a corporate social responsibility project, the Minano Digital Eco Farm came to life through the voluntary engagement of 优蜜传媒employees in Japan who supported the project on top of their regular work.

The project is supported by a government program unique for Japan, the so-called hometown tax payment, which makes it possible for citizens to choose and support the region they were born and raised in or a community they wish to engage with.

鈥淭he possibility of hometown tax payment is very popular among Japanese people,鈥 Hidenori Kurosawa, vice governor of Minano, explains. 鈥淭o us in rural regions, it seems that this played a significant role in creating an interest in the countryside. People want to get to know and support local towns.鈥

Indeed, the appeal of small, thinly populated communities surrounded by beautiful forest landscape hasn鈥檛 gone unnoticed by Japanese inland tourists.

Kurosawa says: 鈥淲e wish to make Minano appealing to visitors by offering return gifts that provide an experience 鈥 that allow visitors to come to the town, interact with the locals, and experience things that are unique to this place.鈥

The Minano Digital Eco Farm project aligns well with this strategy. Not only does it promote Minano’s charm but, by expanding initiatives, it addresses local challenges such as reclamation of abandoned farmland, increased self-sufficiency in food, reduction of CO2 emissions, and improved profitability in agriculture.

鈥淲e have great expectations that this initiative will contribute to addressing the town’s challenges and advancing the UN SDGs,鈥 Kurosawa states. 鈥淲e express our sincere gratitude to the volunteers from 优蜜传媒Japan who provided invaluable assistance in bringing the Minano Digital Eco Farm project to life.鈥

鈥淢INNANO鈥 means 鈥渇or everyone鈥 in Japanese and is pronounced the same way as the name of the town. Fukui from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication explains the idea behind that name: 鈥淥ne action can have multiple meaningful impacts. The issue of unseen small-scale dispersed farms facing economic challenges can be witnessed around the globe. By collaborating with SAP, we hope to inspire rural communities beyond our own prefecture, maybe even beyond Japan.鈥

Mercedes-Benz has committed to move the company鈥檚 B2B business to 100% digital and plans to sell 25% of all new cars online by 2025. The company selected to help support this mission. It will create a future-proof composable commerce portfolio designed to reliably power the company鈥檚 digital strategy, including a standardized offering across different markets. It will also simplify processes and reduce time-to-market.

Benefits of Digitalized Fleet Management

From the 优蜜传媒employee鈥檚 perspective, ordering a company EV couldn鈥檛 be simpler. Instead of time-consuming manual research and back and forth communication with the car dealer, employees can use to order the EV they want directly from the Mercedes-Benz online catalog. They can choose the features they want, such as car make and model, color, and equipment packages, within SAP鈥檚 pre-set guidelines.

鈥淭he car configurator automates the EV selection process end-to-end, eliminating manual steps and saving time while providing the employee with a highly personalized experience,鈥 said Steffen Krautwasser, head of SAP鈥檚 global car fleet. 鈥淎utomating the approval process assures data consistency and eliminates the need for manual quality checks.鈥 

There鈥檚 a tremendous convenience factor in captured EV data as well. In one pilot program for select EVs in SAP鈥檚 fleet, the digital twin will automatically track mileage. Drivers will no longer need to manually enter mileage every time they recharge, and 优蜜传媒can use this data to better manage the fleet.

Connected Data Drives Sustainable Business

Once ordered, EVs are tracked as assets in SAP鈥檚 financial system. After delivery, creates a digital twin that can capture relevant, secure data across the EV鈥檚 lifetime. SAP鈥檚 fleet management team can track CO2 emissions based on green energy usage, mileage, and the number of vehicles on the road. Krautwasser envisioned reporting this data to support the company鈥檚 global sustainability commitments.

优蜜传媒Digital Vehicle Suite delivers a holistic approach to vehicle, sales, and data management

鈥淧erformance data from the EV digital twin can help corporate fleet managers guide employees in choosing the best vehicle for their driving needs,鈥 said Krautwasser. 鈥淥ver time, drivers can better understand travel ranges between charges.鈥 

Data is expected to help address so-called range anxiety, alerting EV drivers when their vehicle needs a charge and, most important, where to recharge. Mercedes-Benz is investing in charging infrastructure to create an ecosystem that would be integrated with public and private charge point providers in the U.S., China, and Europe.

The partnership also reflects a shared commitment to sustainability. Mercedes-Benz has committed to become carbon neutral by 2038, and transition to 100% electric vehicles by 2030 wherever possible. 优蜜传媒is transitioning the company鈥檚 vehicle fleet for employees in Germany to all EVs by 2025 as part of its corporate commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Omnichannel Is Fastest Path to Customer Love

The digital experience is extremely important for customers who expect convenience and quality. Organizations in many industries have shifted to an omnichannel strategy that offers people their preferred experience, whether online or in-person, building brand loyalty and repeat business.

Especially in the field of generative AI, artificial intelligence will leave no stone unturned. But another technology is making progress that, in my opinion, will massively revolutionize the business world, if not society. I’m talking about quantum computing.

Leveraging quantum mechanical effects such as superposition, entanglement, and interference, quantum computers could soon be able to solve certain problems exponentially faster than classical computers. The disruptive power of quantum already shows promise in fields of application spanning from material science and cryptography to business optimization and AI.

A year ago, I tasked a team within 优蜜传媒to study the unique features of quantum computers, with the goal to investigate how these features could solve complex business problems more quickly, accurately, and on a larger scale than ever before.

At the recent in New York, we presented the integration of IBM Quantum services into our as a proof of concept. This marks an important milestone in the progress of quantum computing towards practical, real-world standard business solutions.

It is SAP鈥檚 mission as world-leading enterprise application provider to deliver the benefits of quantum computing via our solutions to our customers.

While still a proof of concept, this engine鈥檚 connection to quantum systems demonstrates the potential for quantum computing to solve real-world business problems, such as packing a truck with assorted beverages, using a fundamentally new approach. Instead of simulating every possible packing combination, the quantum solver leverages the inherent parallelism of quantum to evaluate multiple possibilities, showing how to find a significantly superior solution than a classical computer.

How did we approach this?

Our exemplary standard component, vehicle space optimization, is directly leveraging quantum computing capabilities, fully automized within our application and technology environment. At the core of this innovation is the enhancement of SAP鈥檚 optimization engine through the incorporation of a potent quantum solver.

Quantum optimization today is about tackling quadratic optimization problems. We augmented the optimization engine with the capabilities to map a business problem to such a quadratic formulation to then feed the quantum computer. This allows us to leverage different algorithms; for example, the well-known . The results coming back from the quantum computer, which are inherently probabilistic, are then post-processed within the optimization engine.

Going one level deeper into the specifics, while high-level programming languages are common in classical computing, quantum computers today are programmed by formulating . With our approach, we encapsulate the complex specific implementation of the quantum circuit within our engine, so that ultimately our ecosystem — customers, consultants, developers — will be able to leverage quantum computing for business problems without studying quantum physics.

Despite the excitement surrounding these developments, 优蜜传媒acknowledges that quantum computers in the current noisy intermediate scale quantum computing (NISQ) era are still too small and too noisy to deliver superior results directly. However, significant progress in the scale and quality of quantum computing in recent years prompted SAP’s collaboration with IBM to explore the current frontier of quantum computing.

The integration of IBM Quantum systems into SAP’s cloud-native optimization service results in a platform to address the gaps that need to be bridged in the coming years. This significant step marks a crucial milestone in SAP’s journey toward the next generation of enterprise software for better business operations and value creation.

Our focus on getting customers on stage to tell their story is unrelenting because are our currency.

Customers talking about their successful implementations and how they use 优蜜传媒solutions is the most powerful way to change perception about 优蜜传媒products. With our human-centered approach, we demonstrate that we support SAP鈥檚 activities and ambitions in different ways: by helping to sell our software and services, drive adoption of our products, improve products based on customer feedback, and promote 优蜜传媒as the innovation partner of choice. Our customer relationships are long-term 鈥 from accompanying customers to go-live, to helping them work successfully with their new 优蜜传媒solution, to helping them with further improvements and innovations.

优蜜传媒AppHaus focuses on use cases where customers want to innovate at speed and have a solution in a matter of months or even weeks. Getting those customers live on the stage at events like 优蜜传媒Sapphire and 优蜜传媒TechEd is a major performance indicator for 优蜜传媒AppHaus.

At 优蜜传媒TechEd this year, for example, our customer success stories included AMD, Doehler, Henkel, Pif Paf, and Orbia. Let鈥檚 not forget, this is always the result of a cross-team effort that involves organizations from across SAP. All organizations contribute their outstanding business and technical knowledge to the overall success. The additional skills 优蜜传媒AppHaus brings to the table are methodologies to understand the needs of people (user research) and visualize the potential solutions (UX design) as well as the skills to execute a customer project on a holistic basis.

How is 优蜜传媒AppHaus scaling its success?

As long ago as 2016, we had to think about how we could scale our approach and create even more customer success stories, which led to us launching our first pilot with a partner based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Today has 22 locations and teams 鈥 three run by 优蜜传媒and 19 by partners 鈥 with more than 15,000 employees. There is an 优蜜传媒AppHaus partner on every continent! Our most recent partner addition is in Mexico.

All partners joined the network as single companies. But over time, the network has evolved, with its members teaming up across the globe to form a community of collaborating companies. What unites them is their joint vision to make innovation real by applying a human-centered approach that starts with people, not technology. To give an example, the network has a very active enterprise architect community with about 120 members currently focusing on generative AI.

优蜜传媒AppHaus typically works with local 优蜜传媒market units to identify smaller, agile partners that can provide a deep understanding of the local culture and a focus on that region or country.

In the team, there鈥檚 a culture of openness, a lack of hierarchy, space for disagreements, and time to reach a consensus. Above all, I would say that the team is a learning organization. The team has the amazing power of reinventing itself every two years or so to embrace new products, trends, and methodologies.

What have you learned about leadership during your time at 优蜜传媒AppHaus?

As a leader, the process of learning how to lead the team the right way is an ongoing process. I absolutely believe in empowering employees to be their best selves and to reach their potential. But the flip side of empowering employees is that employees need to take accountability. The role of a leader is to find the balance.

I have had a very good experience with just being authentic, telling it like it is, and putting my ego aside. It is all about the team and its focus on customer success. I am a person just like everybody else. And, yes, I play a certain role, but like others I too have had my challenges.

I鈥檝e led 优蜜传媒AppHaus since it was founded 10 years ago. During that time, I had cancer twice. It gave me a chance to reinvent myself. Today, I am thankful for this experience because it helped me find a better work-life balance and become a better leader. My key takeaway is this: focus on the topics that really matter, get them done, and give others the space to do what they are best at.

Developed by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), an 优蜜传媒global strategic partner, the Circelligence tool, built on 优蜜传媒Business Technology Platform (优蜜传媒BTP), uses BCG鈥檚 鈥淐ircelligence鈥 methodology to help Hilti maximize the value of raw materials and resources.

Despite providing places for people to live, work and play, the construction industry has a large footprint on the environment, using 50% of the world鈥檚 mined raw materials. Prioritizing the circular economy and sustainability, Hilti is embedding circularity in its operations, a move that establishes the benchmark for sustainable practices in the construction industry. With Circelligence, Hilti can calculate a qualitative and quantitative circularity score. Leveraging 优蜜传媒BTP, Hilti can automate updates to BCG鈥檚 Circelligence database of materials and track them across the value chain from input to product design, production, business model and usage and end of life with a user-friendly, Web-based interface.

鈥淭here is no internationally recognized standard for measuring circularity as opposed to, for example, measuring greenhouse gas emissions. So, we created one for our purposes. Ultimately, we wanted to set an example for the industry, not only the construction industry but the broader landscape of any company that鈥檚 embarking on the journey of circularity,鈥 said Caroline Stern, Head of Circular Economy, The Hilti Group. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about keeping materials in use, but also mitigating supply chain risks and being less dependent on volatile international markets for raw materials.鈥

The transparency created by the database has helped define Hilti鈥檚 circularity initiatives, such as the creation of remanufacturing operations at its 70 repair centers worldwide. Here, Hilti technicians extract electronics, motors, rotors and other parts from returned equipment, enabling reuse rather than purchasing new parts without compromising on quality, thanks to extensive testing. Additionally, parts that cannot be reused are responsibly recycled by qualified partners, with Hilti providing all information on reuse and recycling to its customers for full transparency.

Actionable Strategies for Elevating Women in Supply Chain /2023/11/elevating-women-in-supply-chain-actionable-strategies/ Mon, 20 Nov 2023 12:15:00 +0000 /?p=213899 Supporting and retaining women in supply chain remains critical to not only the success of women in this space, but in many ways also to fostering sustainable and resilient supply chains.

According to a , women representation in C-suite supply chain roles has risen from 19% in 2022 to 26% in 2023. Encouragingly, there has also been an increase in the percentage of women in the supply chain workforce, from 39% to 41%. While these are considered positive shifts in the industry, there is a notable lag in the percentage of frontline roles held by women in this space, ranging from 26% to 34% across various leadership levels.

Design risk out of your supply chain with SAP

In a recent panel discussion hosted by the 优蜜传媒North America Business Women鈥檚 Network and EY Women in SAP, women supply chain leaders shed light on some important trends, challenges, and strategies for advancing women in supply chain.

The discussion was moderated by Lori Foster, managing director for EY 优蜜传媒Consulting. On the panel, I was joined by Etosha Thurman, chief marketing and solutions officer for 优蜜传媒Intelligent Spend & Business Network, Regenia Sanders, partner at EY Business Consulting, and Angelee Tango, manager for EY 优蜜传媒Extended Warehouse Management. Opening remarks were provided by Yolanda Kirksey, 优蜜传媒Alliance leader and director for 优蜜传媒Ariba U.S. Go-to-Market for EY.

A few key strategies emerged from the discussion for how organizations can help to elevate women in supply chain:

1. Support the choice to stay with flexibility

A consequence of the global pandemic was a moment of reassessment for women juggling full-time careers with responsibilities at home. In that moment, many women (and men) chose to shift their priorities outside of work or simply had to make that shift to address the needs at home. What we as business leaders can learn from observing this trend is the need to create environments that support women and accommodate work-life balance.

An important point called out in this panel discussion is that work-life balance looks different for everyone. Organizations must set an expectation of respect and boundaries that allow for all employees to manage the many responsibilities they have outside of work — regardless of marital status, if they have children or grandchildren, or if they are a caregiver in another capacity. A culture supportive of pursuing career aspirations while maintaining a healthy balance in personal life empowers women to effectively set and maintain boundaries as well as seek help when needed.

2. Recruit for top skills to succeed in supply chain roles

The panel named skills like curiosity, customer focus, relationship building, change management, crisis management, and communication as both crucial factors for success in this field and areas in which women tend to excel, citing the . Collaboration was underscored by several panelists as essential. Tango shared, 鈥淔rom determining the technology we want to use to the final stage of implementation, the need to continuously evaluate requires everyone to be on board.鈥

The panel suggested that having more women engaged in these transformative projects helping facilitate collaboration is a strategic way to support innovation that sticks. As Sanders stated, 鈥淢aking sure [internal stakeholders鈥橾 input is being heard when gathering requirements is a critical difference-maker to having an organization that actually embraces technology versus being intimidated by it.鈥

3. Provide forums that encourage open discussion

At any stage in your career, it can be helpful to hear of the challenges other women supply chain professionals have faced and how they overcame them. What Foster shared on this topic stood out to me: 鈥淚t鈥檚 easy for people to see where you are today, but not what you went through to get there.鈥 That sense of mutual respect and understanding helps to build confidence.

Role models also play an important role. Thurman spoke to the importance of representation: 鈥淪eeing people who look like you and can manage a life like you is important to how we move forward.鈥

Of the many valuable individual takeaways from this discussion, a few specific pieces of advice resonated with me for women looking to elevate their careers in supply chain:

1. Set and hold boundaries where they make sense for you

You must be willing to reshape your own conceptions of how you need to be perceived and what your role needs to be. Instead of trying to meet this picture-perfect standard, work from an understanding of what you want and need so you can set and maintain reasonable boundaries with a career that requires significant flexibility.

2. Know that you belong and operate in that way

As a woman working in a male-dominated field, it is likely that you will experience moments where you or your contributions are slighted, discounted, or ignored. While we are working to change that behavior, when this happens it鈥檚 important to remember to focus on what you want to achieve. If you feel that you are not yet at a point in your career to remedy the situation directly, ask for help.听

3. Use your voice

There is an advantage to being different. If you are one woman in a room of 50 men and you can clearly articulate your point well, you will be remembered. As you build your brand, opportunities will follow. And when you have the chance to support other women in your field, lend your voice to advocate, guide, and champion the next generation of leaders.

There is a lot that we can learn from each other, in and across industries. These leaders conveyed inspiring journeys in their supply chain careers where they have encountered and continue to navigate a wide spectrum of challenges, but also have found fulfillment in this line of work. This open discussion represented a significant stride toward acknowledging the challenges, opportunities, and collective efforts needed to empower and elevate women in supply chain.

As these forums continue, my hope is that they will not only support and inspire women through a vast network of supply chain professionals, but also drive toward a more equitable and inclusive supply chain landscape.

Granted, those experiences aren鈥檛 always positive. But when everything is working in sync 鈥 travel and transportation infrastructure, aerospace technology, energy, retail, hospitality, and more 鈥 to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts, my thoughts can鈥檛 help but shift skyward, to another more familiar ecosystem.

Grow and find a competitive edge with industry cloud solutions from 优蜜传媒and partners

Among the many developments I鈥檝e witnessed lately as a result of SAP鈥檚 growing focus on industry innovation, SAP鈥檚 industry cloud and the partner ecosystem that supports it stand out. They鈥檙e proving my long-held belief that a high level of collaboration with partners across companies and industries, similar to what occurs at airports, can open boundless opportunities to cultivate new markets, customers, and revenue sources. SAP鈥檚 industry cloud has yielded close to 400 solutions across 25 industry verticals, 80% of which were developed by partners either on their own or in collaboration with SAP. About 1,900 unique customers are using these solutions, and they鈥檙e renewing them at a rate above 90%.

What鈥檚 driving the industry innovation momentum? And why should 优蜜传媒partners consider engaging in the co-innovation effort if they鈥檙e not already, or get more involved if they are? Here are five competitive justifications:

  1. Future readiness: A business landscape that is perpetually shifting and evolving, often in unexpected ways, demands a business mindset that embraces change and seeks out opportunities to innovate 鈥 a mindset of future readiness. A focus on industry innovation fosters future readiness on multiple levels. It gives partners a portfolio of solutions to help their customers prepare for a future where cloud solutions will be instrumental to their digital transformation efforts. One leading global consulting firm predicts that by 2027, enterprises will be using industry cloud platforms to accelerate more than half of their critical business initiatives. What鈥檚 more, working within an industry cloud environment like SAP鈥檚 can give partners themselves a future-ready model for growing their business.
  2. Business ecosystems and networks: By bringing their industry knowledge and intellectual property to a business ecosystem like the one that supports SAP鈥檚 industry cloud, partners can become a multiplier for industry innovation, moving solutions through the development pipeline and to customers faster together than they otherwise could working individually. We鈥檙e witnessing this multiplier effect within specific industries like consumer products, life sciences, automotive, energy, and industrial manufacturing, where collaboration within industry-focused business ecosystems is fueling a fresh wave of co-innovation.
  3. Modularity and integration: One of my team鈥檚 responsibilities is to maintain the industry cloud opportunity map, a comprehensive architecture of potential and already developed solutions that comprise the present and future of industry innovation in the cloud. A glance at the opportunity map tells a compelling story about all the white space available to partners to fill out the portfolio. Intellectual property and ideas are the building blocks in this case. The door is wide open for partners to bring use cases that enhance, extend, or add to an existing solution, or that fill gaps in the opportunity map. Using 优蜜传媒Business Technology Platform (优蜜传媒BTP) and 优蜜传媒Store, they can rapidly develop their ideas and turn them into commercialized solutions that customers can readily integrate.
  4. Industry convergence: Just like at the airport, we鈥檙e seeing the lines between industries blur and converge as traditional value chains merge. This creates massive opportunities for 优蜜传媒partners to develop new revenue streams around solutions that they adapt from one industry for use in another, or that can be used by customers across multiple industries. Electric vehicle charging is sparking a convergence among automotive, energy, oil and gas, utility, and retail and consumer products, for example. And that, in turn, is providing fertile territory for 优蜜传媒partners with use cases and intellectual property in these areas to collaborate and create new solutions that can add value for customers.
  5. Customer experience: By focusing on industry innovation, our goal is to give customers exactly what they need to succeed from a digital solutions standpoint. The better SAP, our partners, and all of us collectively as an ecosystem are at delivering the solutions customers need, the more trust we create with them. And that opens even more possibilities for SAP, partners, and customers alike 鈥 possibilities that conjure the familiar feeling I get at the airport when I鈥檓 waiting to board my next flight.

优蜜传媒is extending its cloud-native, in-memory database to AWS Graviton-powered Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances to take advantage of AWS鈥檚 price, Performance and energy efficiency benefits.

Arm-based AWS Graviton processors leverage AWS鈥檚 extensive expertise in systems design and cloud infrastructure to deliver the best price performance over comparable x86-based instances for a variety of workloads running in Amazon EC2. By migrating 优蜜传媒HANA Cloud to AWS Graviton-based Amazon EC2 instances, 优蜜传媒has seen up to 30% better compute performance for analytical workloads and lowered its compute costs by 15%. And with Graviton3-based instances using up to 60% less energy for the same performance than comparable EC2 instances, 优蜜传媒can reduce the compute carbon footprint of the workloads of 优蜜传媒HANA Cloud by an estimated 45%. AWS Graviton3 also supports the latest DDR5 memory, which provides 50% higher memory bandwidth compared to DDR4, to improve the performance of memory-intensive applications.

As a signatory of Amazon鈥檚 The Climate Pledge, 优蜜传媒is actively working alongside 427 organizations in 38 countries to help reduce carbon emissions and ultimately improve the environment. By choosing to run 优蜜传媒HANA Cloud on AWS Graviton, 优蜜传媒can further its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and support efforts to address the climate crisis. 优蜜传媒and AWS have a longstanding relationship spanning back to 2008, when 优蜜传媒developed and tested the 优蜜传媒NetWeaver technology platform 鈥 the underpinning of 优蜜传媒S/4HANA and many other cloud solutions from 优蜜传媒on AWS.
